Survive Selling Your House with the Kids!

Survive Selling Your House with the Kids!
Selling your house is exciting but it can also become a bit stressful, especially when you have little ones to look after all the while. Well, we are here to help you survive the selling process with the kiddos! Let’s take a look and alleviate some of that stress.
It’s time to make a game plan! Start by having conversations about the move with your kids. Managing emotions will keep tantrums at bay so keep your kids in the loop. Keep them up to date by having open conversations about why things need to be put away for a while, or explain that the entire family has their stuff being moved to a better house, where everything and everyone will still be together. Involve them in the process as much as you can; that can be by packing together, dropping off donation items together, or cleaning! You’ll need your children’s cooperation more than ever during this time so do your best to make this an exciting process, explain to your family all the good things about the new house (better yard, new parks, bigger rooms, etc.).
Now that we’ve got the kids on board, we need to make a schedule for showings. Avoid fatigue from non-stop cleaning and set yourself up for success! If your children are in organized sports, let your real estate agent know their schedule so they can plan showings with those times in mind and bring multiple potential buyers at the same time. If not some organized extracurricular, choose something you can do once or twice a week as a family outing like going to the park for a couple of hours!
Lastly, we understand that while it is ideal to have a plan, life happens and some things are out of our control. So if you can’t keep to the schedule or if a curveball is thrown your way, here is a quick list to make sure your house is up to par, even if you’re not!
  • Open up windows and curtains
  • Quickly pick up toys and clutter off floors in main walking ways
  • Turn on accent lights and lamps
  • Clear the kitchen counters
  • Wipe down surfaces in kitchen and living rooms
  • Free up the front door of shoes and clutter
  • Make sure all the beds are made
  • Close closet doors, pantry, and cabinets
  • Spray air freshener near the front entrance
  • Gather your kids in one area while you prepare the house

If you have this list in mind beforehand and are prepared it will be a breeze! Keep empty bins or totes handy to fill with items for times like these. And finally, discuss this with your kids early in the process so that if this situation arises, they won’t panic.

Ultimately, selling your home with kids is tough, but you can be ready for every twist and turn with the right game plan.

Deep cleaning, decluttering and smart staging before a home hits the market can pay off big time. Once you’ve done that initial legwork, corral everyday messes and chaos by sticking to a core checklist that will help you get the house ready for buyers.

With a top real estate agent on your side, you can focus on getting the family excited for the new adventure that lies ahead. Stay positive and keep a caring attitude as this will be a memorable step for you and your family!
